A Rare Jewel.. My 6 year old daughter and I were walking through the fields last evening. As we were walking she saw something up ahead but we could not tell what it is. She ran ahead of me trying her hardest to get to these shiny objects in the middle of a cut corn field. ( which by the way, is not easy to run through). She approached these treasures, and yells, " they are pretty balloons Mama." " May I have them." As we walked back through the fields and woods, she is untangling them, only one out of three is in great shape. She has decided she would keep the one good one and throw the rest of them away when we get home. This balloon seem to be the highlight of her day. When we finally got back to the house, my neighbor came over to bring a pan back of mine. We were sitting out on the step talking with her, Susie was telling her about her new balloon. While she was standing there it took flight , as it soured high above the house, a look of desperation came across her face.I saw her eyes start to well up as she just watched it helplessly fly across Mr. Davis' fields across the road. This balloon seemed to be a rare treasure that she had found, the focus of her very life at this time . At this point I myself, am in total shock. Susie is a quiet, well behaved, un spolied child. Who gives toys, pictures and anything she can to someone else. I had to stop and think about this situation that was taking place before my very eyes. It troubled me to see her in this way. It was extremely rare for her . As I sat and thought about it I realized that in her mind she found a rare jewel, something beautiful, and she was able to keep it. To let something that nice go was crushing to her, she may never find another one. Wow, I thought this is an important lesson in life, and she doesn't even realize it. As we sat and hugged, I explained to her that a little girl before her on her birthday recieved those as a gift, and she lost them. Then you found those special birthday balloons and you were able to have fun and admire the bright colors. Now it will fly away and some other little girl will find them, and play with them. The joy of this balloon will be passed to many little girls, until it runs out of air and deflates. You can take this little story and put your own meaning to it, it has several to me. Each one is special. Just like the people we meet through the years, and I hope that each person I meet and have met was able to share a little of my joy before I took flight. As I pass through this life I have had some crushing moment's like Susie letting those jewel's go, but remembering that they are making someone else's life just as bright as they made mine... Thanks for reading, and in my eyes everyone I met is a friend, a rare jewel I found . I look for the beauty in them, and remember the joy they shared with me. Margie
